The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in theoretical nuclear physics beginning in Fall 2016. The successful applicant will work with one of the members of ODU Nuclear Theory Group (Profs. I. Balitsky, A. V. Radyushkin, R. Schiavilla, J. W. Van Orden), and their colleagues at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility on a program of studies in one of the following areas of theoretical nuclear physics: (i) study of perturbative and nonperturbative aspects of interactions described by quantum chromodynamics (QCD); (ii) application of perturbative QCD to processes included in the physics program of Jefferson Lab and future EIC collider; (iii) strong and electroweak interaction processes in nuclei; (iv) application of relativistic models and wave equations to electron scattering from the deuteron and triton, and to constituent quark models of mesons.

The applicant must have a PhD or equivalent in theoretical nuclear or high-energy physics and should have PhD experience in one of the areas of theoretical nuclear physics listed above.

The Temple University Nuclear and Particle Physics group has an opening for a postdoctoral research fellow position in experimental nuclear physics with an emphasis on detector development. The group studies proton spin structure and dynamics using high-energy polarized p+p collisions at BNL/RHIC, focusing primarily on gluon and quark/antiquark polarization using both jet and W production. The group has a strong interest in micro-pattern detector development, in particular GEM detectors for a future Electron-Ion Collider. We profit from a new state-of-the-art detector and clean room facility provided by the new Science Education and Research Center at Temple University. The work is carried out in close collaboration with a group at CEA Saclay, led by Dr. Franck SabatiÃ©, focusing on MicroMegas detectors. Extended research visits to France are anticipated.

The candidate is expected to play a leading role in physics analysis and detector development. A strong background in ROOT and general programming skills are required. In addition, a strong interest in detector development and experience in working with particle physics detectors is essential. Exceptional candidates might be considered for a position as a research assistant professor.

In June 2016 Mike Pennington will step down from his position as Associate Director for Theory at Jefferson Lab. We have posted this position on the Jefferson Lab website (https://www.jlab.org/job-openings) and posted an advertisement in Physics Today (http://jobs.physicstoday.org/jobs/7712394/associate-director-theory-cen…).

We have also appointed a search committee with a distinguished membership to conduct an international search and provide me with final recommendations for this position. The committee will be co-chaired by Joe Carlson of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Bob McKeown of Jefferson Lab. Members will be Charlotte Elster (Ohio U.), Franz Gross (Jefferson Lab emeritus), Frithjof Karsch (Bielefeld U. & BNL), Krishna Rajagopal (MIT), and Feng Yuan (LBNL).

Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking outstanding candidates for a faculty position in experimental nuclear science. MSU is establishing the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as the leading rare isotope scientific user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science and is operating the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) as a world-class laboratory for nuclear science with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

The successful candidate is expected to establish a successful, internationally recognized research program that complements ongoing research efforts and that takes advantage of the capabilities of NSCL now and FRIB in the future. Research at NSCL addresses key questions concerning the creation of the elements in the cosmos, the limits of nuclear stability, the production and properties of nuclei with very unusual neutron-to-proton ratios, the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter as it may exist inside neutron stars, as well as tests of fundamental symmetries and the search for interactions beyond the standard model. New areas of research include harvesting of long-lived isotopes for societal applications and other technical innovations.

Faculty appointments will be in the FRIB/NSCL faculty system at a rank commensurate with experience. FRIB/NSCL faculty members typically have joint appointments in an MSU academic department, such as Physics and Astronomy or Chemistry, where they are expected to teach courses and supervise graduate students. Research Associate Position in Experimental Nuclear Physics at the University of Michigan on PHENIX/sPHENIX

The RHIC group at the University of Michigan is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate, with a start date between January and April 2016. The candidate will be expected to work primarily on analysis of PHENIX 2015 transversely polarized proton-proton data, as well as contribute to the development of the EMCal for the proposed sPHENIX detector at RHIC. The individual could be stationed either at BNL or in Ann Arbor.
