Research Associate - University of Virginia

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate to begin in January 2014. The successful candidate will work with Prof. Xiaochao Zheng and in the area of experimental nuclear physics with a focus on experiments at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV Upgrade and possibly other innovations related to polarized 3He. The Jefferson Lab 12 GeV experiments that Prof. Zheng is working on include measurement of the neutron spin asymmetry A1n in both Halls A and C, and parity-violation in deep inelastic scattering (PVDIS) using the new SoLID spectrometer.

This is a one year appointment; however appointments may be renewed for additional one- or two-year extensions, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. The position can be stationed in either Charlottesville or Jefferson Lab, but frequent travel between the two locations will be needed.

The completion of a Ph.D. degree in experimental nuclear or high energy physics is required by the appointment start date. Experience in detector development with a focus on electromagnetic calorimeters, polarized 3He target work, GEANT-based simulations, and supervising students at both undergrad and graduate levels are highly preferred. The candidate must be able to lead and manage research projects independently.

To apply, please submit a candidate profile on-line through Jobs@UVA (https://jobs.virginia.edu) and attach the following: a cover letter, curriculum vitae and the contact information for three professional references; search on posting number 0613286.

Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2013; however, the position will remain open until filled.
