Postdoc - ALPHA at CERN

Postdoc - ALPHA at CERN

(TRIUMF Competition # 423)

ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser PHysics Apparatus) is an ambitious international project located at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva Switzerland. The project's aim is to perform precision tests of fundamental symmetries between matter and antimatter with trapped antihydrogen atoms. In 2010 we achieved our major milestone of stable trapping of antihydrogen, and subsequently resonantly excited its hyperfine transitions with microwaves. A new apparatus suitable to perform precision optical and microwave spectroscopy on antihydrogen has been constructed, and this work will start with the resumption of antiproton beams this summer.

ALPHA-Canada, one of the leading groups in ALPHA, is an interdisciplinary team of physicists from TRIUMF, the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, and York University. ALPHA-Canada is responsible for much of the particle physics aspect of the experiment including detector design, readout electronics, data acquisition, on-line/off-line software, Monte Carlo simulations, and physics analysis. We are leading the antihydrogen microwave spectroscopy and laser cooling initiatives.

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow who will lead the particle physics aspects of the experiment, and who also has interest in contributing to other areas including atomic, plasma, trap and spectroscopy physics. ALPHA is a dynamic experiment, where physicists from diverse disciplines interact and work very closely, therefore willingness and interest in learning new subjects is essential. The successful candidate is expected to lead the software and hardware efforts for ALPHA detectors, as well as the physics analysis. He/she will also participate in the operation and the maintenance of the existing hardware and software, in particular, a 37000 channel Si vertex detector and its associated software.

Qualifications for the position include: a Ph.D. in experimental atomic, plasma, nuclear or particle physics; competency in one or more of the following: ROOT, C++, GEANT3/4, LabVIEW, and MIDAS; and basic knowledge of detector electronics and data acquisition systems. Experience or interest in any of the following areas will be considered an asset: Si vertex detectors, particle tracking algorithms, FPGA firmware programming, ion/atom traps, non-neutral plasmas, cold atoms, vacuum and cryogenic systems, precision lasers, or microwave spectroscopy

This is a contract position administered through TRIUMF, Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics. The successful applicant will be located at CERN, and occasional travel to Vancouver, BC may be required. The initial contract is for 1 year, and will be renewed annually based on mutual satisfaction and continued funding for the project.

We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email as noted below, and will include the following:

*Employment Application Form (http://admin.triumf.ca/docs/forms/applicat.pdf)
*Cover letter which includes salary expectations
*CV
*Statement of research interests
*A list of publications
*The names and contact info of 3 persons who will provide reference letters if requested.

The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. All complete applications received before March 17, 2014 will be considered.
