The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (JGU) and the PRISMA Cluster of Excellence invite applications for an appointment at the level of a University Professor (m/f) for theoretical hadron physics in the field of nucleon structure analysis (salary class W 2; LBesG) starting from winter semester 2014/15 and limited for six years. Following the temporary employment, a permanent faculty appointment is possible.

PRISMA (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter) is focused on the key questions concerning the fundamental constituents of matter and their implications for the physics of the Universe. PRISMA is supported by several high-profile research groups in the areas of particle, astro-particle, hadron and atomic physics at the University of Mainz and the associated Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM).

We are looking for an outstanding researcher who will significantly expand the activities in the field of theoretical hadron physics at the Johannes Gutenberg University and establish within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA an analysis centre for hadron structure.

The successful candidate should have obtained recognition through her or his research achievements in the field of theoretical hadron physics and will work closely with the experimental groups in the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA and at the Helmholtz Institute Mainz. A new research group should be established that provides combined theoretical analyses of current and future experiments on hadron structure. This work should aim at significantly lowering the dominant hadronic uncertainties in precision measurements for the search for new physics.

The appointment requires participation in teaching activities at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. We expect that candidates have the necessary educational commitment. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz support a concept of intensive tutoring and expects a high rate of presence at the university.

Applicants must meet the general requirements according to public services law and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition to a PhD in physics a first rate research record must be proven.
