Associate Physicist in the BNL Nuclear Theory Group

The Nuclear Theory Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory plans to hire an outstanding theorist at the level of Associate Physicist. The position will be a joint position with the RIKEN-BNL Research Center as a RHIC Physics Fellow. The candidate chosen would be hired for an initial term of two years with the possibility of an extension up to five years and eventual promotion to a tenured staff position. In exceptional cases, a hire at the physicist level will be considered.

BNL’s Nuclear Theory group performs research in all areas of high energy QCD, including perturbative QCD, hadronic spin physics and the parton structure of hadrons, small x physics, QCD at finite temperature and baryon density, and novel methods and techniques in nuclear theory. In particular, the group's focus is on the theory and phenomenology related to the experimental programs at RHIC, the LHC and other current facilities in nuclear physics, and the science program of a future Electron-Ion Collider.

A Ph.D. degree in nuclear or particle physics is required as well as postdoctoral research experience in nuclear or particle physics. The successful candidate will be expected to perform independent as well as collaborative theoretical research on the physics of high energy QCD, in particular, in the areas of perturbative QCD and the hadron’s parton structure, hadron spin physics, the phenomenology of high energy hadron and nuclear collisions, and research in support of current and future experimental programs at RHIC and on the science program of a future Electron-Ion Collider.

All candidates should apply through the BNL careers website through Job 865 / Jr Staff.

In addition, all candidates should send all the following materials:

a curriculum vitae
a statement of research interests
arrange to have at least three letters of recommendations in pdf format sent by the referees, by email to the administrator for the Nuclear Theory group, Dorothy Davis at dorothyd@bnl.gov. Please be sure to refer to the Job ID in the email.

The deadline for applications is December 1, 2016, but applications will be considered until the position is filled.
