Staff Scientist (Instrumentation - Physics Division) - 82927

The Physics Division (http://physics.lbl.gov/) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an opening for a Staff Scientist with expertise in instrumentation. We invite applications from experimental physicists with a record of substantial accomplishment and creative ability for one or more Staff Scientist positions.

The appointment(s) may be either career-track or career, depending on seniority. The career-track Staff Scientist position is a five-year appointment with the expectation of promotion to a career position as Staff Scientist.

Applicants should have two or more years of experience beyond PhD related to experimental particle physics or cosmology, or overall equivalent experience, and have demonstrated original achievements in research. We welcome all applicants with exceptional promise to advance the art of experimentation in particle physics and cosmology; expertise in instrumentation, especially related to superconducting devices or semiconductor detectors, is highly desirable. Familiarity with one or more of the following is desirable: microfabrication, integrated circuit electronics, precision physics detector assembly.

A Staff Scientist is expected to play a leading role in her/his scientific field and will be encouraged to contribute to research that may enable transformational advances or new opportunities in one or more of LBNL’s scientific research areas. LBNL has a long tradition of pioneering work developing new detectors, devices, and methods for fundamental physics experimentation. Beginning with the invention of the cyclotron itself, this history includes the development of the bubble chamber, the time projection chamber, red-sensitive CCDs, precision pixel and strip semiconductor tracking detectors, CMB detectors and readout, and innovative microelectronics and DAQ systems.

Within the LBNL Physics Division, there is a broad range of research in collider experiments, rare decay searches, neutrino physics, cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations and supernova cosmology, and direct searches for dark matter. We support a diverse program for state of the art instrumentation development, with significant technical capabilities including the MicroSystems Laboratory, IC Design Group, Advanced Composites Facility and partnerships with the LBNL Engineering, Nuclear, Materials, Computing Sciences, and the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Divisions. We have a very close connection with the UC Berkeley Physics Department, as well as collaborations with other departments including Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, Astronomy, and the Space Sciences Laboratory.
