Junior Research Scientists in Mainz, Germany

 The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) "Hadrons and Nuclei as Discovery Tools" (www.sfb1660.de) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) invites applications for  Junior Research Scientists in Experimental or Theoretical Physics. This interdisciplinary center is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the strong interaction, probing the limits of the Standard Model, and pioneering high-precision experiments and modern theoretical approaches.

Your Role
We are seeking an outstanding early-career scientist with a strong research profile and leadership potential. The successful candidate is expected to actively shape the scientific direction of the CRC, contribute to collaborative initiatives across research pillars, and engage with CRC-wide activities including mentoring, workshops, and training formats. A key aim of this position is to prepare for a future Project Leader (PL) role in the next CRC funding period starting in 2028. The initial contract will run until mid-2028. In the event of a successful renewal of the CRC, the position will be extended by an additional four years.

Your Profile
• PhD in Physics or a closely related field in 2022 or later. Extensions to this eligibility window will be considered in accordance with DFG guidelines (e.g. for childcare or other officially recognized career breaks)
• Strong research background in one or more of the CRC’s thematic areas: atomic, nuclear, or hadron physics
• Demonstrated independence and experience in experimental or theoretical research
• Interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration and in contributing to the CRC’s strategic
development
