The Laboratory for Nuclear Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the development of a polarized He-3 ion source for RHIC/EIC at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY. The BNL-MIT collaboration has developed metastability exchange optical pumping at high magnetic field to polarize He-3 atoms which are injected into an extended configuration of the existing Electron Beam Ionization Source (EBIS). Fully stripped, polarized He-3++ ions will be extracted from the EBIS, accelerated to 6 MeV energy and their nuclear polarization measured in a scattering experiment of known analyzing power. Subsequently, polarized He-3 ions will be accelerated and injected into RHIC. Candidates should have experience in the design, construction and operation of experimental equipment. There will also be the opportunity to collaborate on a related project at Jefferson Laboratory, Newport News, VA to realize a polarized He-3 gas target for the CLAS12 detector.

Review of applications will begin at the time of receipt, and the position will remain open until filled. To ensure full consideration, candidates should apply at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23848 by February 1, 2023. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a brief statement of research interests and experience, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent electronically.  Any questions can be directed to me at this address.
