Tenure Track Faculty Position in Computational Theoretical Nuclear Physics

The Department of Physics at New Mexico State University anticipates
hiring a tenure-track assistant professor in theoretical nuclear physics
with an emphasis on computational methods. The position is planned to be
funded in part for the first five years by the Riken BNL Research Center
(RBRC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). During those five years,
the successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load and will be
located at BNL for half of the calendar year, where the candidate will
be expected to conduct research promoting the science case of the future
Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). At the end of the five-year period, the
position is expected to revert to a full-time, tenure-track faculty
position at NMSU. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and
graduate physics, and establish a vigorous externally-funded research
program directly involving graduate and/or undergraduate students.

The NMSU Department of Physics offers Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral
degrees in physics and Bachelor's degrees in engineering physics. Current
research areas in the department include high-energy nuclear physics,
solid-state/condensed-matter physics, materials science, and optics.
The theoretical nuclear and particle physics group (M. Engelhardt,
M. Sievert) pursues research in the areas of hot and cold QCD, including
hadron structure, lattice QCD, jets, and gluon saturation. The experimental
high-energy nuclear physics group (M. Paolone, S. Pate, V. Papavassiliou)
conducts research in nuclear structure that includes the MicroBooNE,
SeaQuest, and SpinQuest experiments at Fermilab as well as nuclear
structure, excitation and medium modification studies at Jefferson Lab.

A Ph.D. in physics or closely related field is required and some postdoctoral
experience is highly desired. Preference will be given to candidates with
experience in hadron structure physics, broadly defined, employing
computational methods. Applications must be filed electronically at
https://careers.nmsu.edu/jobs/499061 and the application system will
require a Resume (CV) with list of publications, a Cover Letter, Unofficial
Transcripts (or analogous documents such as degree certificates,
undergraduate and graduate), an Equity, Inclusion and Diversity (EID)
Statement, and as further Supporting Documents (combined into one file)
a statement of research interests and a short description of the candidate's
teaching philosophy. The contact information of three persons familiar
with the candidate who are willing to provide letters of reference will
also be required. To receive full consideration, electronic applications
must be complete by January 2, 2024. The position is anticipated to start
in Fall 2024. For further information or questions please contact the chair
of the search committee, Prof. Michael Engelhardt (engel@nmsu.edu). NMSU
is an Equal-Opportunity/Affirmative-Action employer; Minorities, Females,
Veterans, and those with a Disability are encouraged to apply.
